When the Trip Gets Tricky: How to Stay Grounded During Psilocybin Journeys
Let’s talk about something that's often not discussed enough—those challenging psilocybin experiences. If you’ve been working with psilocybin for any length of time, you know that not every journey is smooth sailing. Sometimes, things get tough. Emotions bubble up, sensations become intense, and it can feel overwhelming. And yet, these moments of difficulty are where some of the deepest growth and healing can take place.
So today, I want to offer some grounded tips on how to navigate those challenging moments with confidence. Whether you’re microdosing or going deeper with macrodoses or medium doses, these tips are designed to help you feel more equipped to move through difficult experiences with a sense of curiosity and resilience.
1. Breathe and Ground Yourself
This might sound simple, but when things get intense, we can easily forget to breathe deeply. Breath is your anchor—especially in challenging moments. When you feel overwhelmed by emotions or physical sensations, take a moment to focus on your breath. Slow, deep breathing helps activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for calming you down.
Try this: Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of four, hold for a moment, and then exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six. Repeat this a few times, and notice how it starts to bring you back into the present moment.
Another way to ground yourself is through physical contact with the earth. If you’re indoors, plant your feet firmly on the floor, or if you’re outside, literally sit or lay on the ground. Connecting with the earth is a powerful way to stabilize your energy and find your footing during turbulent moments.
2. Welcome the Discomfort
This might seem counterintuitive, but resisting the discomfort only makes it stronger. One of the most transformative shifts you can make during a challenging psilocybin experience is to welcome whatever is coming up, even if it feels intense. Often, difficult emotions or sensations arise because they’re asking for your attention. They’ve been stored in your body or mind for a while, and now psilocybin is giving you the chance to face them.
In moments of discomfort, remind yourself: I am safe. This is temporary. I can sit with this. By acknowledging and welcoming the experience, you shift from being a passive participant to an active co-creator of your journey. You’re no longer fighting the current, but flowing with it.
3. Label Your Experience
When you’re in the midst of a challenging trip, emotions and sensations can feel tangled. One effective way to navigate these moments is by labeling what you’re feeling. This is a technique from mindfulness practices, and it works wonders when things get chaotic.
For example, if you feel anxious, simply say to yourself, This is anxiety. If you’re feeling physical discomfort, say to yourself, This is discomfort. By naming the experience, you create a little bit of distance between you and the emotion or sensation, making it easier to observe without getting swept away.
Labeling the experience also helps remind you that it’s just that—an experience. It’s not who you are. It’s something you’re feeling or sensing in the moment, and it will pass.
4. Focus on Your Intention
Before any psilocybin journey, it’s always a good idea to set an intention. Your intention acts as your North Star, guiding you through the experience, even when it gets difficult. When things start to feel overwhelming, take a moment to come back to your intention. Why did you embark on this journey in the first place?
By reconnecting with your intention, you remind yourself of the purpose behind the discomfort. It helps you see that these challenging emotions or sensations are likely part of the greater healing or insight you’re seeking. Sometimes, the tough moments are the doorway to the breakthroughs we’ve been searching for.
5. Use Sound or Music to Shift Your Energy
Sound is an incredibly powerful tool during psilocybin experiences. If you’re feeling stuck in a difficult moment, music can help you shift the energy and change the tone of your journey. Choose music that is soothing and supportive, or if you need to move through emotions, select music that resonates with what you’re feeling. Allow the music to guide you through the experience.
If music isn’t available or feels overwhelming, try focusing on ambient sounds around you. Even the sound of your breath can serve as an anchor. Some people find that humming or gently chanting helps to calm their mind and body during intense experiences.
6. Get Moving
When emotions or physical sensations become too overwhelming, moving your body can be an incredible way to release tension and shift energy. If you feel stuck in anxiety or discomfort, try standing up, stretching, or even dancing. Gentle movement helps your body process what’s coming up and can help you feel more grounded in the moment.
Sometimes, the energy you feel during a psilocybin experience needs to be expressed physically. Don’t be afraid to move, shake, stretch, or dance it out. Even if you’re just swaying gently, it can make a huge difference in how you feel.
7. Remember: This Will Pass
When you’re in the thick of a challenging psilocybin experience, it can feel like it’s going to last forever. But the truth is, everything you’re feeling is temporary. Remind yourself: This will pass.
Emotions and sensations rise and fall in waves, and the intensity you’re feeling right now will not last. Trust in the process and know that, on the other side of this experience, you may gain incredible insights, clarity, and healing.
8. Ask for Support
If you’re journeying with others or have a trusted sitter, don’t hesitate to ask for support. Sometimes, just having someone nearby can help you feel more grounded and safe. Even if you’re alone, reaching out to a supportive friend by text or call can remind you that you’re not isolated in your experience.
If you’re working with a guide or therapist, they can provide the reassurance and grounding presence you need to navigate the difficult emotions or sensations you’re experiencing. Never hesitate to ask for the support you need—it can make a world of difference.
